Follow The Rules
Follow The Rules If you havereceived specificinstructions and rules related to a companys hiring process, do not deviate from them.Choosing to make up yourown ruleswill most likelyresult in a lost job opportunity and a tarnished reputation. You may evenput the reputation ofothers at risk so follow the rules. Recently, I learned ofan individualwho had an inside track on a great job opportunity withinhis company and chose to share it with an organization givingthem very specific instructionshow to apply forthe position. Threeoffour candidates applying followed the instructions as given, however, the fourth candidate chose to ignore the instructions and contacted the principal of the company directly. Not only didthat person violate the trust that had been extended tohim, the individualsreputation was put on the line and theprofessionalism of the organization was called intoquestion. Needless to say, only those candidates whochose to follow therules were contacted for an interview. Following the rules orspecific instructionsestablished by a company regarding their employment processes is not something to bequestioned if you are interested in obtaining a job with them.Doyou recall your grade school days when tests were given with clear, read first instructions? If you didnt follow them, you failed! Innovation, persistence, determination and creativity are all wonderfulpersonality traits and may lead you away from a commonpath in your job search but if you areprovided with specific instructions from a potential employer, I recommend you follow their rules if you want tosucceed in obtaining a job interview.
